If you draw two of any of the same socks, you will have a pair. The most socks you can have without having a single pair is 1 black, 1 blue, 1 brown, and 1 red. The next sock you will draw will guarantee you have a pair. Therefore, the answer is 5.

The worst case scenario is to draw one black, one blue, one brown, and one red. That is four socks representing all the colors. Now if you draw again another sock, there will be a matching pair.

At least 5, so that at least one colour has two socks.
