Consider the equation |y|=cos x

  • Case 1: If y>0 , then in the graph y=cos x, upper half of the graph is taken since y>0.

  • Case 2: If y<0 , we need to multiply "y" by -1 to get rid of modulus sign. So -y=cos x or y=-cos x, in this graph (y=-cos x) only the lower half of it is taken since y<0.

Combining both the graphs of the two cases we get the graph shown in the question, i.e |y|=cos x.
