A rare expensive diamond is in one of three boxes, one of which is red, one white and one blue. Only one statement below must be true

Red box: The diamond is in this box.

White box: The diamond is not in the red box.

Blue box: The diamond is not in this box.

• If the diamond is in the red box ,

then the diamond is in the red box, the diamond can't be in the white box and is in the blue box too , since

only one statement can be true so red box is ruled out.

• If the diamond is in the white box,

then the diamond can't be at the red box , the diamond is in the white box and blue box too, since

only one statement can be true so white box is ruled out.

• If the diamond is in the blue box,

the diamond can't be at the red box, the diamond is in the white box , can't be at the blue box

Therefore the answer is blue box

Isn't it the white box.

If the red box statement is true, then the diamond is in the red box, but then the blue box statement would be false, so the diamond would have to be in the blue box. Therefore the red box statement can't be true.

If the blue box statement is true, then the diamond is not in the blue box. BUT if the white box and red box statements are lies, then they contradict each other, so the blue box statement can't be true.

If the white box statement is true, then the diamond is not in the red box. The red box would lie when it is saying that the diamond is in the box, so it is not in the red box. Meanwhile, if blue is lying when saying the diamond is not in the blue box, then the diamond must be in the blue box. Therefore, the white box must be the true statement.

You are correct in saying that the white box has the true statement.

But the question intends to ask "which box has the diamond ?"

It is not necessary that the box having the true statement must have the diamond.

Oh, I thought the question was asking for the box that had the true statement. This wasn't clearly mentioned in the question.

The true statement must be either on the red box or the white box, because the diamond either is or is not in the red box. Both of those statements cannot be simultaneously false.

Since only one statement is true, the statement on the blue box must be a lie. So the diamond is in the blue box.
