Displacement vs. Distance

Geometry Level 1

Ron the Mouse travels 80 centimeters north and then 150 centimeters east.

Let d d be the distance traveled by Ron the Mouse and s s be the magnitude of the displacement of the mouse.

Find the value (in centimeters) of d s . d-s.

The answer is 60.

Distance ( d d ) = 80 + 150 = 230 = 80 + 150 = 230 cm

By Pythagoras theorem we can find the displacement:

s = 8 0 2 + 15 0 2 s = \sqrt{80^{2}+150^{2}}

s = 6400 + 22500 s = \sqrt{6400+22500}

s = 28900 s = \sqrt{28900}

s = 170 s = 170 cm

So, the answer is: d s = 230 170 = 60 c m d - s = 230 - 170 = \boxed{60 cm}

ok. i got it.

The Distance travelled by Ron the Mouse is 80 + 150 = 230 80+150 = 230 Centimeters. By the Pythagorean Theorem we get that the magnitude of Displacement of Ron the Mouse is 170 Centimeters. therefore the difference of the 2 is 230 170 = 60 230-170 = \boxed{60}

how is the displacement equal 170 ?

Displacement is diagonal it is 170 so difference is 150+ 80 – 170 = 60 cm

The distance traveled=d=80+150=230cm

The magnitude of displacement=sq.rt.((150)^2+(80)^2) = 170cm

Therfore, d-s=60

s = 50 + 80 = 230 d = (50² + 80²)^1/2

s - d = - 60 d - s = 60

there is a error in the problem

distance taken = 230 displacement= 150

d-s= 60

80+150=230 cm = d 170cm= s so d-s = 230-170= 60 cm

total distance traveled (d) = 80 +150 = 230 cm,
displacement (s) = (80^2+150^2)^(1/2) = 170 cm,
d-s = 230 -170 = 60 cm

sq rt [ (80)^2 + (150)^2 ] - (170)= 60 cm
