For those who still don't get it even after rechecking the question, 4 1 / 2 = 4 1 / ( 1 / 2 ) = 4 2 = 16. \sqrt [ 1/2 ]{ 4 } ={ 4 }^{ 1/(1/2) }={ 4 }^{ 2 }=16. A square root is the second root of a number whereas in this case it's the "halfth" root.
