Does this got to do with palindromes?

If x x and y y are integers, then which of the following can be a value of 24 x + 42 y ? 24x + 42y?

1 2 3 4 5 6

24 x + 42 y = 6 ( 4 x + 7 y ) 24x+42y=6(4x+7y) . Since x x and y y are both integers, the answer must be a multiple of 6. The only choice is therefore 6. This can happen when x = 2 x=2 and y = 1 y=-1 .

That was the exact same way I solved this problem.

Bézout's Identity states that

x , y Z \exists~ x,y \in Z and x , y 0 x,y \ne 0 then

a x + b y = d ax+by=d where d = gcd ( a , b ) d=\gcd(a,b)

So for the equation;

24 x + 42 y = d 24x + 42y = d

d = gcd ( 24 , 42 ) d = \gcd(24,42) then

d = 6 d = 6

The answer is 6 \boxed{6}
