x = amount of money with which the students starts in cents
n = number of charities
The first condition translated, becomes
x − 2 5 n = − 1 0 ( 1 )
The second condition translated, becomes
x − 2 0 n = 2 5 ( 2 )
Subtracting ( 1 ) from ( 2 ) , we obtain
5 n = 3 5
Dividing both sides by 5 , we get
n = 7
Finally,
x − 2 5 n = − 1 0
x − 2 5 ( 7 ) = − 1 0
x = 1 6 5 c e n t s answer
