Simon is a happy man today. If Simon looks back at his life, he finds that he spent one-sixth of his life in childhood, one-twelfth as an adolescent and one-seventh more as an eligible bachelor. Five years after his marriage he had his son Marvin who gave Simon the happiness of being a grandfather four years ago, when Marvin was half of Simon's age today. How old is Simon today?


The answer is 84.

Let Simon's present age be X

The years that went by until he had his son Marvin,

Y = X 6 \frac{X}{6} + X 12 \frac{X}{12} + X 7 \frac{X}{7} +5

Then Marvin's age when he had his child = Y - 4 = X 2 \frac{X}{2}

Hence,

X 6 \frac{X}{6} + X 12 \frac{X}{12} + X 7 \frac{X}{7} +5-4= X 2 \frac{X}{2}

Solving which, X=84
