Consider two vectors α = ( 2 , 1 , 5 ) \alpha = (2 , -1, 5) and β = ( 4 , 0 , 1 ) \beta = (-4, 0, 1) .

α . β = 2 × ( 4 ) + 0 + 1 × 5 \alpha.\beta=2\times (-4)+0+1\times 5 = 3 -3

as simple as that

Try the inner product. There is a subtle difference because we have complex numbers.
