What is the minimum number of moves to checkmate in chess?

Assumptions:

  • The checkmate position could either be White or Black.
  • Every one move made by White or Black is consider one move. Ex: e 4 \displaystyle e4 is one move, e 4 , e 5 \displaystyle e4, e5 are two moves.

The minimum moves to checkmate in chess, is also known as the Fool's mate . Those are the moves:

  1. f 3 , e 5 \displaystyle f3, e5

  2. g 4 , Q h 4 \displaystyle g4, Qh4

You haven't shown that this is indeed the shortest, i.e. you can't do it in 3 moves or less.
