At what point did we use the assumption that x , y x, y are positive reals?

Perhaps at y 4 = 16 y = 2 y^4=16~~\Longrightarrow~~y=2 , since solutions are 2 , - 2 , 2 i , - 2 i 2,~\text-2,~2i,~\text-2i .

3 . 2^3=24 -----2^4= 16-------16+24= 40

40 - 16= 24.
