Einstein's Election Riddle

Level 2

So Einstein is back with his famous riddle. There are five houses with the outside walls painted in five different ways. David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel each live in one of the houses. They each drink a certain type of coffee, have a preferred mode of transport and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, the same preferred mode of transport or drink the same type of coffee.

Who owns the fish?

  1. Nicola lives in the tartan house.
  2. Ed has a guinea pig
  3. David drinks mochaccino.
  4. The paisley house is on the left of the gingham house
  5. The owner of the paisley house drinks flat whites.
  6. The person who drives by car has a squirrel.
  7. The owner of the striped house travels by bike.
  8. The person living in the centre house drinks double espresso.
  9. Nick lives in the first house.
  10. The person who travels by train lives next to the one who has a pitbull.
  11. The person who has a badger lives next to the person who travels by bike.
  12. The person who travels by plane drinks chai latte. 13 Nigel goes everywhere by foot.
  13. Nick lives next to the polka dot house.
  14. The person who travels by train has a neighbour who drinks decaf.

For the sake of clarity: the houses are adjacent to each other in a line and the directions are from the perspective of someone looking at the houses. And any resemblance of David, Ed, Nick, Nicola and Nigel to the party leaders is purely coincidental. You have to solve this problem by logic, not by having had a coffee with any of them.

It’s a bank holiday, so no excuses for not having a try.

  • Clue 9: Nick lives in the first house.
  • Clue 13b: Second house is the polka dot house.
  • Clue 8: Double espresso in centre house.
  • Clue 5: Flat whites in Paisley house means it is not the centre house.
  • Clue 4: Paisley house is left gingham house, so must be the fourth and gingham, last.
  • Clue 1: Nicola's tartan house not the first house, must be the centre house.
  • Clue 7: The first house must be the striped house and Nick is driving a bike.
  • Clue 11: Badger in second house.

See below for outcomes so far:

\[\begin{array} {} Striped & Polka\space dot & Tartan & Paisley & Gingham \\ Nick & & Nicola & & \\ & & Espresso & Flat\space whites & \\ Bike & & & & \\ & Badger & & & \end{array} \]

  • Clue 3: David who drinks mochaccino can either be in the polka dot or Gingham house.
  • Clue 12: The person by train drinks chai latte also either in the polko dot or gingham house.
  • Clue 13a: This leaves Nigel who travels by foot be in the paisley house.
  • Now only the gingham house can have guinea pig; therefore, Ed is in gingham house.
  • Leaving David who drinks mochaccino in polka dot house and travels by train.
  • Clue 14: Since Nicola drinks flat whites, Nick's coffer must be decaf.
  • Leaving Ed, the person who drinks chai latte and travelling by plane.
  • And Nicola must be travelling by car and owning a squirrel.
  • Clue 10: Since Nicola owns a squirrel, Nick must own a pitbull.
  • Leaving the person who owns the fish being N i g e l \boxed{Nigel} .

\[\begin{array} {} Striped & Polka\space dot & Tartan & Paisley & Gingham \\ Nick & Divid & Nicola &\color{blue}{Nigel} & Ed \\ Decaf & Mochaccino & Espresso & Flat\space whites & Chai latte \\ Bike & Train & Car & By foot & Plane \\ Pitbull & Badger & Squirrel & \color{blue}{Fish} & Guinea pig \end{array} \]
