Electronic Transition Wavelength

Find the wavelength of the photon needed to excite the electron in hydrogen from the n = 3 n=3 to n = 5 n=5 level. Please give your answer in nanometers rounded to the nearest hundred nanometers.

The answer is 1300.

Using Rydberg's formula for electronic transitions:

h c λ = 13.6 eV ( 1 25 1 9 ) . \frac{hc}{\lambda} = -13.6 \text{ eV} (\frac{1}{25} - \frac{1}{9}).

Plugging in the numbers for h h and c c and rearranging gives the result λ 1300 nm \lambda \approx 1300 \text{ nm} .
