Elevating the averages

I have a list of 5 numbers, the average of which is 5.
I add a number x x to the list, and the average of these 6 numbers becomes 6.
I add another number y y to it, and the average of these 7 numbers now becomes 7.

What is the average of x x and y ? y?

The answer is 12.

the average of 5 numbers is 5.so,their sum total is= 5 × 5 = 25 5 \times 5=25

the average of 7 numbers is 7.so,their sum total is= 7 × 7 = 49 7 \times 7=49

so, x + y = 49 25 = 24 x+y=49-25=24

and ,their average is= 24 2 = 12 \frac{24}{2}=12

If the average of 5 numbers is 5, their sum must be 25. If the average of 7 numbers is 7, their sum must be 49. This means the sum of the two new numbers is 49 25 = 24 49 - 25 = 24 , and their average must be 12 \boxed{12} .
