Energy of an incident photon

Level pending

A photon of wavelength 250 nanometres is incident on a zinc surface. Zinc has a work function of 4.33 eV. Using the data given calculate the maximum kinetic energy after the electron has absorbed the photon and has been released from the metal. h=6.63 10^-34 c=3 10^8 m/s e=1.6*10^-19 C

Calculate a value in Joules.

1.03*10^-19 1.04*10^-19 1.07*10^-18 1.06*10^-19 1.03*10^-18

energy= hc/wavelength In order to calculate the energy of the incident photon we must convert the wavelength to metres and substitute the value in. hc/250 10^-19=7.956 10^-9. Then we must convert the work function to joules by multiplying the value (that is given in electron volts) by the 1.6 10^-19. Finally to calculate the maximum kinetic energy we subtract the work function from the energy of the incident photon to give a value of 1.03 10^-19.
