Energy phloe(m) II

Suppose that sap in the phloem carries sucrose at a concentration ρ s \rho_s moles sucrose per liter of sap, at a speed of v s v_s m/s, and that each mole of sucrose has an available energy content E s E_s . Which expression describes the flux of energy along the phloem?

The energy flux Φ \Phi is defined as the energy transfer per unit area. Let the cross-sectional area of the phloem be A A , then the total energy transferred per second is: d E d t = E s ρ s A v s \frac{dE}{dt}=E_s\rho_s A v_s Since Φ = 1 A d E d t \Phi = \frac{1}{A}\frac{dE}{dt} Φ = E s v s ρ s \Rightarrow \boxed {\Phi = E_s v_s \rho_s}
