Equation of Circles

Geometry Level 1

If ( 1 , 3 ) (-1, -3) and ( 5 , 1 ) (5, 1) are two endpoints of a diameter of a circle, what is the equation of the circle?

( x 1 ) 2 + ( y + 1 ) 2 = 11 (x-1)^2+(y+1)^2=11 ( x 2 ) 2 + ( y 1 ) 2 = 13 (x-2)^2+(y-1)^2=13 ( x 2 ) 2 + ( y + 1 ) 2 = 11 (x-2)^2+(y+1)^2=11 ( x 2 ) 2 + ( y + 1 ) 2 = 13 (x-2)^2+(y+1)^2=13

given by the two points as the diameter, use the midpoint formula to solve the center. And the center will be ( 2, -1 ). To find the radius, used the distance formula, find the distance from the center to any points given, so the radius will be sq.root of 13.

(x+1)(x-5) + (y+3)(y-1) = 0 (x-2)^2 + (y+1)^2 = 13
