"Homologous" means "having similar structure or relation between parts", as for example a seal's flipper and a bear's paw. Both have a common ancestor, but evolution changed their "paws" only just sufficiently for new and different functions.

This is contrast with "analogous", which may not have similar structure or relation of parts, but nonetheless share the "same function", such as bird wings and bat wings.
