Final exam grade

Level pending

Your course grade is a weighted average of three grades: your homework grade (50%), your midterm exam grade (20%), and your final exam grade (30%). If your homework grade is 85 and your midterm exam grade was a 92, then what minimum grade do you need to achieve on your final exam to earn at least a 90 for the class?

The answer is 97.

The minimum final exam grade needed for at least a 90 in the class is the final exam grade needed to achieve a 90 in the class.

The final exam grade needed to achieve a 90 for the class is x: ( 0.5 ) 85 + ( 0.2 ) 92 + ( 0.3 ) x = 90 (0.5) \cdot 85 + (0.2) \cdot 92 + (0.3) \cdot x = 90

x = 90 ( 0.5 ) 85 ( 0.2 ) 92 0.3 x = \frac {90 - (0.5) \cdot 85 - (0.2) \cdot 92}{0.3}

x = 97 x = 97
