Let p = P e t e r p = Peter

Given the information in the question we can get an equation

p + 7 3 = p 13 \frac {p + 7}{3} = p - 13

Re-arranging this you can get a value for p p

p + 7 = 3 ( p 13 ) p + 7 = 3 p 39 p = 3 p 46 p + 7 = 3(p - 13) \Rightarrow p + 7 = 3p - 39 \Rightarrow p = 3p - 46

The problem now is that p p is on both sides, to fix this we need to re-arrange it some more

p = 3 p 46 p + 46 = 3 p 46 = 2 p p = 23 p = 3p - 46 \Rightarrow p + 46 = 3p \Rightarrow 46 = 2p \Rightarrow p = 23

So Peter's current age is 23 23

let his age 13 years ago be x , x+13+7= 3x , 2x=20 , x=10 , his age now is x+13=23 years old

Let x be the age of peter: 1/3(x+7)=(x-13) (x+7)/3=(x-13) x+7=3x-39 x+7-7=3x-39-7 x=3x-46 x-3x=3x-46-3x -2x=-46 x=23 use your mind.
