From the first equation we see that x , y ≥ 0 x, y\geq 0 . From the second equation we see that only 1 1 and 4 4 are the possible integer pairs to satisfy it. So, there are two solutions, viz., ( 1 , 4 ) (1,4) and ( 4 , 1 ) (4,1) .
