here it is: 3 x = x + 26 3x=x+26

or, 2 x = 26 2x=26

Let the smaller number be x x :

3 x = x + 26 2 x = 26 3x=x+26 \Rightarrow 2x=26 x = 13 x=\boxed{13}

Let x x be the larger number and y y be the smaller number, then

x y = 26 x-y=26 ( 1 ) \color{#D61F06}(1)

x = 3 y x=3y ( 2 ) \color{#D61F06}(2)

Substituting ( 2 ) \color{#D61F06}(2) in ( 1 ) \color{#D61F06}(1) , we get

3 y y = 26 3y-y=26

2 y = 26 2y=26

y = 13 \boxed{y=13}
