If the length and the width of the larger rectangle be l l and b b , then those of the smaller rectangle are l 2 \dfrac{l}{2} and b 2 \dfrac{b}{2} respectively. Then l b 4 = 10 \dfrac{lb}{4}=10 . Total area of the two rectangles is 5 l b 4 = 50 \dfrac {5lb}{4}=\boxed {50} .

How did you conclude that length and width of the smaller rectangle is l 2 , b 2 \frac{l}{2}, \frac{b}{2} ? No where is it written
