Find the culprit!

Logic Level 2

One morning, a man woke up and found, much to his horror, that his four car tyres were all punctured! Furious, he questioned four men whom he suspected were behind the act. These were the responses he received from the four men, only ONE of whom is actually guilty:

  • Kenneth: Noel is innocent.

  • Larry: Marcus is guilty.

  • Marcus: Larry is lying.

  • Noel: Either Larry or Marcus is guilty.

The guilty man is a liar, but he is NOT the only liar among the four men. Who punctured the car tyres?

Kenneth Larry Noel Marcus

Larry and Marcus gave contradicting statements, thus exactly one of them lied and this liar might be our criminal along with at least another liar, but Noel accused him anyway while Kenneth maintained Noel's innocence. Since in this case the supposed criminal is the only liar amongst all four, then it must have been a lying innocent accusing another innocent.

Therefore, exactly one of Noel or Kenneth is the criminal, and Noel's statement is already false by default. As for Kenneth, he's either telling the truth or implicitly accusing another as the criminal with his lie, both of which are out of the character of our criminal.

In conclusion, Noel is the lying criminal with Kenneth and Larry being his comrades in lies.

It can't be Kenneth because then "Noel is innocent" would be a lie, so there would be two guilty men, which isn't possible.

If Larry or Marcus were guilty, then Kenneth and Noel would both tell the truth. If Larry was guilty, hen he would lie, so Marcus' statement would be true, which makes 3 statements true, but as stated, this can't happen. If Marcus was guilty, then Larry would tell the truth, and again, this can't happen.

Since only Noel is left now and someone of them is guilty, he must have punctured the tyres.

If Larry was guilty, hen he would ly, so Marcus' statement would be true, which makes 3 statements true, but as stated, this can't happen.

What is this "ly"?
