Find the greedy pig (II)

Logic Level 2

One day, there was a piece of cake meant for Eric. However, it went missing. His parents, Mr and Mrs Tan, suspected that one of his siblings ate the piece of cake and so questioned them. Here were their answers:

  • Charles: Brenda ate it.

  • Darius: I did not eat it.

  • Brenda: Alfred ate it.

  • Alfred: I ate it.

TWO of them are telling the truth. Who ate the piece of cake?

Darius Brenda Alfred Charles

Brenda and Alfred are saying the same thing, so even though they could either be honest or lying, the point is that they're doing it together, against the words of the other two, Charles and Darius (from the statement of "TWO of them are telling the truth"). Looking at Darius' and Alfred's statements, since they're on the opposing sides, the scenario is either they both ate the cake or neither one did. We're told that the parents knew only one of the children is guilty, so Darius's side told the truth while Alfred and Brenda lied. Then it must be that Charles made a true accusation against Brenda who's actually guilty of cake stealing.

If Charles ate it, only Darius is telling the truth. If Darius ate it, no one is telling the truth. If Brenda ate it, Charles and Darius are telling the truth. If Alfred ate it, Darius, Brenda and Alfred are all telling the truth. The only way exactly two people are telling the truth, is if Brenda ate. Therefore, Brenda ate it.
