This sequence can also be represented as a ( 2 k − 1 ) = k 2 + 1 a(2k - 1) = k^{2} + 1 and a ( 2 k ) = ( k + 1 ) 2 − 1 a(2k) = (k + 1)^{2} - 1 for k ≥ 1 k \ge 1 .
