Take everything m o d 5 \mod 5 , then the equation becomes 7 y 2 1 m o d 5 -7y^2 \equiv -1\mod 5 . Solving for y 2 y^2 , we get y 2 3 m o d 5 y^2 \equiv 3\mod 5 . However, 3 3 is not a quadratic residue m o d 5 \mod 5 , meaning that the equation has no integer solutions.
