Find The Shortcut

Geometry Level 1

The 16 × 24 16 \times 24 rectangle above is cut up into 4 triangles, 3 of which have perimeters 48, 36, 56, respectively, as indicated by the numbers inside them.

What is the perimeter of the remaining green triangle?

The answer is 60.

Sum of given three triangles perimeter = 48 + 36 + 56 = 140.

Now observe that , 140 = 2(16+24) + required triangle's perimeter.

So therefore, required triangle's perimeter = 140 - 80 = 60 .

Add the perimeters of the 3 triangles perimeters to get the length of all the lines on the diagram F. F= 48 + 36 + 56 = 140

Perimeter of the outer rectangle R is: R = 24 + 24 + 16 + 16 = 80

If we want just the perimeter of the green triangle G you need to take away the perimeter of the outer rectangle from the full set of lines. G = F - R G = 140 - 80 G = 60
