Find the values of A, B, C, D and E

Algebra Level 2

A, B, C, D and E are single one digit numbers. When you multiply them by 4, it is the reverse order - E, D, C, B, A.

What are the values of A, B, C, D and E?

ABCDE

x 4

EDCBA

A = 0 B = 2 C = 4 D = 6 E = 8 A = 2 B = 1 C = 9 D = 7 E = 8 A = 1 B = 3 C = 5 D = 7 E = 9

As multiple choice, it's a simple matter of testing the choices. 21978 x 4 = 87912. Would be a bit more challenging if the choices weren't provided.

You are actually correct. Thanks for solving this problem.

The problem with no choices being provided is that multiple solutions can exist. In this case for example, consider a = b = c = d = e = 0, then the property also holds, and therefore is a solution. In those cases it is the best to ask how many solutions are possible.
