Suppose, the three numbers are x , y x, y and z z .

Sum of the numbers is 98 98 .

Now,

x + y + z = 98 ( 1 ) x + y + z = 98………………(1)

The ratio of the first to the second is 2 3 \dfrac{2}{3}

x y \dfrac{x}{y} = 2 3 \dfrac{2}{3}

x = x = 2 3 \dfrac{2}{3} \cdot y y .

x = x = 2 3 \dfrac{2}{3}

The ratio of the second to the third is 5 8 \dfrac{5}{8}

y z \dfrac{y}{z} = = 5 8 \dfrac{5}{8}

z y \dfrac{z}{y} = = 8 5 \dfrac{8}{5}

z = z = 8 5 \dfrac{8}{5} \cdot y y .

z = z = 8 5 \dfrac{8}{5}

Put the value of x = x = 2 y 3 \dfrac{2y}{3} and z = z = 8 y 5 \dfrac{8y}{5} in ( 1 ) (1) .

2 y 3 \dfrac{2y}{3} + y + + y + 8 y 5 \dfrac{8y}{5} = 98 = 98

49 y 15 \dfrac{49y}{15} = 98 = 98 .

49 y = 98 × 15 49y = 98 × 15 .

49 y = 1470 49y = 1470 .

y = y = 1470 49 \dfrac{1470}{49} .

y = 30 y = 30 .

Therefore, the second number is 30 30 .
