Five Golden Rings

Algebra Level 2

(Image from tiss-nc.org)

Each ring's owner is as follows :

1st Ring: Henry
2nd Ring: Ian
3rd Ring: Jack
4th Ring: Ken
5th Ring: Liam

When the 5 rings are stacked vertically (in the way the picture above shows) they measure 28 millimeters.

Henry's ring measures 3 mm. Ian's ring measures twice of Jack's ring. Jack's ring measures 2 3 \frac { 2 }{ 3 } of Ken's ring. Ken's ring measure twice of Henry's ring. Liam's ring measures the same as Henry's ring and Jack's ring combined.

Whose Ring is the Thickest?

Liam Ian Jack Henry Ken

Let Jack's ring measures x mm.

Then, widths of rings ( in mm) of :

Henry : 3

Jack : x

Ian : 2x

Ken : 3 x 2 \frac{3x}{2} , which is equal twice as wide as Henry's ring = 6 mm ; then x= 4 mm

Liam : x

We see that Ian's ring is the thickest at 8 mm.

You do need a hint for the thickness of Liam's ring as the total thickness is already given.
