Formulas make everything easier

Algebra Level 2

The first semester accounts for 30% of my final grade, the second semester accounts for 40% of my final grade, and my final test accounts for the rest.

If I got a 98 for my first semester, a 92 for my second semester, and want to get a 95 as my final grade, what must be the minimum score on my final? (94.5 rounds up to 95)

(round to the tenths place)

The answer is 94.3.

To find the answer, we must simply create a formula.

a=first semester grade,
b=second semester grade,
c=final test grade,
d=overall class grade,

0.3(a) + 0.4(b) + 0.3(c) = d

Replacing the variables with the known values, we get this equation:

0.3(98) + 0.4(92) + 0.3(c) ≥ 94.5

After solving for c, we get the answer (rounded to the tenth decimal place):

c ≥ 94.3

Moderator note:

Given that it asks for the minimum value, you should be using inequality signs to show why that would be the minimum.
