A shopkeeper wants to offer you the "friends and family discount", where he adds 10% to your purchase price and then subtracts 10% from that total.

Is this a good deal?

Let the cost be $ 100 \$100

So on adding 10%, the amount will be -

100 + 10 100 × 100 = 110 100+\frac { 10 }{ 100 } \times 100\\ =\quad 110

And on subtracting 10% from it, the price will be -

110 10 100 × 110 = 99 110-\frac { 10 }{ 100 } \times 110\\ =99

So you pay $1 less.

Nice. giving an initial cost price can be useful in working out the problem.
