From Where Does S n C l 4 SnCl_4 come? Haww!!!

Chemistry Level pending

19 g of molten S n C l 2 SnCl_2 is electrolyzed for some time using inert electrodes.0.119 g of S n Sn is deposited at the cathode.No substance is lost during the electrolysis.Find the ratio of the weight of S n C l 2 SnCl_2 and S n C l 4 SnCl_4 after electrolysis.

Chlorine at anode is not lost. So it combines with remaining S n C l 2 SnCl_2 to give S n C l 4 SnCl_4 . Eq. of Sn deposited=0.002 Eq. of S n C l 2 SnCl_2 decomposed=0.002 Eq. of chlorine produced=0.002 Weight of S n C l 4 SnCl_4 formed = 0.002 * 261/2 =0.261 g

(See this if you don't understand this step https://books.google.co.in/books?id=R0ZLAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA633&lpg=PA633&dq=equivalent+weight+of+SnCl4&source=bl&ots=bdF5G1HhiC&sig=6P51Nyiap1SVHOVDzUiNtYegR6w&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjL4tq-1KTKAhUKG44KHUxMCgsQ6AEIITAB#v=onepage&q=equivalent%20weight%20of%20SnCl4&f=false )

Weight of S n C l 2 SnCl_2 left = initial wt. - decomposed wt. - wt. combined with chlorine=19-(0.002 190/2+0.002 190/2 g=18.62 g
