Furan-ception

Chemistry Level 3

We start with compound A :

On heating it with 1,1-Diethoxyethene, we get compound X . It undergoes the next set of reactions sequentially:

  • In presence of a mild oxidising agent an unstable intermediate is formed. This intermediate reacts with compound A on mild heating to give Y

  • Y reacts with another oxidising agent (slightly stronger than the previous one) to generate another unstable intermediate. On reaction with and excess amount of P h 3 P C H 2 Ph_{3}PCH_{2} generates compound B . We do not allow B to undergo any further reactions.

We now analyse compound B 's spectra. Let α \alpha be the number of signals obtained in H-NMR and β \beta be the number of signals obtained in the C 13 C_{13} NMR.

What is the value of α × β 3 \alpha \times \beta - 3 ?

Bonus :

Try interpreting the multiplet(s) in compound B 's H-NMR spectra.

The answer is 6.
