The least number of squares in the given dimension can be determined using the fibonacci squares.

Since the dimension 89 and 55 cm follows the Fibonacci sequence which in the 10th and 9th term respectively then the Fibonacci square produced were a (55 by 55), (34 by 34), (21 by 21), (13 by 13), (8 by 8), (5 by 5), (3 by 3), (2 by 2) , (1 by 1), and (1 by 1) cm.

Hence the least number of square piece can be produced by (89 by 55) cm is 10 \boxed{10}
