The Earth is not a perfect sphere. If it were, the poles wold be 2 R 2R distance apart. Instead, it is bulged at equator. Thus the distance between the poles is slightly less than 2 R 2R .

I think that earth is bulged at the equator.

It is said that earth is a geoid , bulging at the centre and flat at the poles. It forms an oval. So, the distance between the poles is less than 2R.
