Joni and Dustin each pick a letter of the English alphabet. Joni writes hers on a piece of paper using a green marker and Dustin writes his on the same piece of paper with a purple crayon. How many choices do they have for which letters they write?

They may write the same letter. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet.

26^2 is the best way to think about it. Try and think about it the way I did. Each letter of the english alphabet is paired with every other letter including itself... AA, AB, AC, AD and so on until... ZW, ZX, ZY, ZZ. if you look at it that way then you know that 26 is surpassed 26 times. therefor it's 26 times 26.

26 * 26 = 676

Joni has 26 choices to write the letter ,same with Dustin therefore : the solution with multiplication law : 26*26 = 676

For e a c h each letter than Joni writes, Dustin can write 26 26 letters. Therefore, if Joni can write 26 26 letters, then they B O T H BOTH can write 26 ∗ 26 = 676 26*26 = \boxed{676} combinations of letters!
