First is to solve for the length of the red rectangle, area is already given
A = L x W
20 = L x 4
L = 5 m
Now solve for the length of the blue rectangle
9 – 5 = 4 m
Then solve for the width of blue rectangle, the area is given
8/4 = 2 m
We can see that the two small rectangles are the same.
Area of the shaded region = ½ x 4 x 2 = 4 square units
Shorter solution: (using the area of the blue triangle)
A = ½ x 8 = 4 square units
