22 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 32 22+2+2+2+2+2=32 . Thus 7 7 is the minimum number of times.

Yep, that is what I had in mind

Since the two buttons 2 2 and + + are included, most would assume that you would just add 2 2 16 16 times, giving 32 32 , thinking that you are not allowed to change the order in which you press them. However, you are allowed to press 2 2 twice in a row, giving the following solution:

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 22 = 32 2+2+2+2+2+22=32

(2^2)*{2^(2/2+2)}

You don't need to calculate how many times 2 is in 36. The biggest number of 2 that can fit in 36 is 22. You can't do this trick again so to make 10 out of 2 you need 10 : 2 = 5. 2 + 5 = 7.
