At the first bus stop, since 10 passengers got off, there are 40 10 = 30 40 - 10 =30 passengers. Adding the 4 passengers that got on, there are 30 + 4 = 34 30 + 4 = 34 passengers on the bus.

Similarly, at the second bus stop, 3 passengers got off so there are 34 3 = 31 34 - 3 = 31 passengers. Adding the 13 passengers that got on, there are 31 + 13 = 44 31 + 13 = 44 passengers on the bus.

Note on clarification: It doesn't matter if "people" or "passengers" were used, the above proof works replacing one word for the other.
