To produce a 40% salt solution, or 40/100( x+12) where x is the percentage amount of salt solution: Therefore, (80%x) + (30%12)= 40% ( x+12) Solve for x.

0.8x + 3.6=0.4x + 4.8 0.4x= 1.2 x= 3 liters.
