Check out for the nearest perfect square less than 2017. We find that 4 4 2 = 1936 44^2 = 1936 is the nearest perfect square to 2017 and smaller than it.

Check out divisibility for all primes less than 44. We find that there is no such prime that divides 2017.

Thus, 2017 is prime \boxed{\text{prime}} .
