Great Circle Route calculations (special considerations may apply)

Geometry Level 3

The above map indicates the Great Circle route (shortest distance on earth surface) between Vancouver Canada and Berlin Germany. The initial bearing for that trip is 26ºeast of north indicated by the red line on the map.

What is the initial bearing for a Great Circle route from Swift Current Saskatchewan Canada (N50º 17’ W107º 11’) to Bombay India (N18º 54’ E72º 49’)

Give your answer in degree east of north to the nearest degree.

The two locations are directly across from one another on the earth’s surface. 180º apart, because they are both in the northern hemisphere the shortest distance is directly over the North Pole.

W107º 11’ to E72º 49’ = 180º
