Classical Mechanics Level 1

Find the greatest and the least possible net force that could result if the two forces acting at a point are 12N and 8N respectively. Find the two extrema. Type your answer as the sum of the two extrema.


The answer is 24.

Greatest force is the sum of both of them which is 20N

Least force is the difference of both which is 4 N

the answer is 24 N

Greatest force must be two forces acting in same direction = 12 N = sum of two forces

Least force must be two forces acting in opposite direction = 8N = difference of two forces

So, the two forces must be 2N and 10N. The sum will therefore be 12 N.
