Grocery Shopping

Algebra Level 2

Kensi and Kyle go grocery shopping together. On the way back home, while struggling with her bags, Kensi says "Hey, if you gave me a bag, I would hold twice as much as you carry. But if I gave you one of mine, we would be carrying the same amount!" How many bags is Kyle carrying?

Let Kyle carry x x bags and Kensi y y bags.

If Kyle gives Kensi a bag, they have x 1 x-1 bags and y + 1 y+1 bags respectively so 2 ( x 1 ) = y + 1 2(x-1) = y+1 so 2 x 2 = y + 1 2x-2 = y+1 or y = 2 x 3 y = 2x-3 .

If Kensi gives Kyle a bag, they have x + 1 x+1 bags and y 1 y-1 respectively so x + 1 = y 1 x+1 = y-1 or y = x + 2 y = x+2 .

Comparing the two equations,

2 x 3 = x + 2 2x - 3 =x+2

( 2 1 ) x = 3 + 2 (2-1) x =3+2

x = 5 x = \boxed{5}
