Gymnastics Math

At a gymnastics competition, 5 judges give a score out of ten. The score for each candidate is calculated in the following manner:

  • The maximum and minimum scores for each candidate are ignored
  • The sum of the remaining scores is the candidates total score
  • The candidate with the highest total score wins
Judge 1 Judge 2 Judge 3 Judge 4 Judge 5
Tess 6 10 6 6 6
Melanie 9 3 6 7 8
Brady 8 1 6 8 8

Who wins the competition?

Brady Tie for first place Tess Melanie

For tess, her high and low scores are 10 and 6, adding the rest we get 6+6+6=18

For melanie, her high and low scores were 9 and 3, so adding 6+7+8=21

For brady, high and low was 8 and 1, so adding 8+8+6=22, hence the winner is brady

Judge 2 is very very biased. Just one judge could greatly affect the final outcome of the results, which is why they get rid of the extreme scores.

Very much so. It's a good thing they do.
