Hard Dielectrics

Level 2

A cylindrical layer of dielectric with permittivity ϵ \epsilon is inserted into a cylindrical capacitor to fill up all the space between the electrodes. The mean radius of the electrodes equals R R , the gap between them is equal to d d , with d < < R d << R . The constant voltage V V is applied across the electrodes of the capacitor. Find the magnitude of the electric force pulling the dielectric into the capacitor.

π R ( ϵ 1 ) V 2 d \frac{\pi R(\epsilon -1)V^2}{d} π ( ϵ 1 ) V 2 ln R 2 R 1 R 1 \frac{\pi (\epsilon -1)V^2}{\ln \frac{R_2-R_1}{R_1}} π ϵ 0 R ( ϵ 1 ) V 2 d \frac{\pi \epsilon_0 R(\epsilon -1)V^2}{d} π ( ϵ 1 ) V 2 ln R 2 R 1 \frac{\pi (\epsilon -1)V^2}{\ln \frac{R_2}{R_1}}
