Hardy-Weinberg

Biology Level pending

You are studying a co dominant flower color polymorphism. Skipping through a meadow of flowers you compile the following data: red>200 pink>100 white>200 What is the frequency of the red allele at this locus under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

The answer is 0.4.

Using the hardy-weinberg equation, p 2 p^2 +2pq + q 2 q^2 =1-------eqn1
p 2 p^2 =freq of homozygous dominant
2pq=freq of heterozygous
q 2 q^2 = freq of homozygous recessive
p= freq of dominant allele
q= freq of recessive allele
also p+q=1---------eqn2
eqn1 is the binomial expansion of eqn2
p 2 p^2 = 200 500 \frac{200}{500}
p 2 p^2 = 0.4
This is the required frequency
