There are only 4 cases, that is ( B , b ) , ( B , g ) , ( G , b ) , ( G , g ) (B,b),\,(B,g),\,(G,b),\,(G,g) where B B stands for boy, G G stands for girl, capital letters stand for the first child, and small letters stand for the second child. Obviously, 2 out of 4 conditions which is ( B , g ) (B,g) and ( G , b ) (G,b) are both a son and a daughter. So, the probrability for having a son and a daugter is 50%.
